Our Story · Est. 1972

Built by Glenn. Carried on by Gavin.

Started by Glenn Holland in Belfast, Maine, in 1972, and now carried on by his grandson Gavin — still a small, deliberate lineup of hulls instead of a new design every season.

Since 1972

Four generations of knowing what a Holland should be

In the fall of 1972, Glenn Holland finished off his first boat — a Repco 30' hull he'd purchased earlier that year. That first build marked the beginning of what would become a lifelong legacy in Down East boatbuilding.

That first boat excited Glenn enough to want to design boats of his own — boats built with purpose, character, and the timeless qualities he believed a lobster boat should have. To bring that vision to life, he reached out to renowned naval architect Royal Lowell, and together they developed the designs that became the foundation of Holland's Boat Shop. The Holland 30' was the start of it.

Over the years, Glenn went on to build the Holland 32, 38, and 14 — each one carrying the craftsmanship, practicality, and unmistakable character that have become synonymous with the Holland name. Now, over five decades later, those boats have only grown more popular with time, earning a reputation as hardworking, dependable, beautifully built classic Down East lobster boats, made to be enjoyed for generations.

Today, as Glenn begins to step back, the next generation is stepping forward. His grandson, Gavin, is taking the helm of Holland's Boat Shop — bringing the business into the 21st century while staying true to the traditions that started it all. The original designs and time-tested character of Glenn's boats remain at the heart of the business, while new ideas and modern capabilities help carry the shop into the future. With the upcoming Holland 20 and continued production of the boats that built the Holland legacy, the next chapter is already underway.

From Glenn's first boat in 1972 to the boats being built today, Holland's Boat Shop remains a family business founded on craftsmanship, tradition, and a love for the classic Down East lobster boat. Built by Glenn. Carried on by Gavin. Generational craftsmanship.

Belfast, Maine

Five hulls, built the same careful way every time

The shop builds a small, deliberate lineup: the 14 outboard skiff, the newer 20, the 32 and 38 downeast cruisers, and a classic rowing Pea Pod. Each one comes from molds and jigs that have been refined build after build, which is part of why owners can order a hull, a kit, or a fully finished boat and know exactly what they're getting.

Boatbuilding trade coverage has followed the shop's newer models over the years — including a feature on the Holland 20 joining "the stable" alongside the long-running 38, 32, and 14.

We keep the lineup narrow on purpose. A shop that builds five hulls well beats one that builds fifty hulls occasionally.

The Lineup, In Brief

What's come out of the shop

Holland 14

The all-purpose skiff

A tiller-steer or center-console outboard skiff — the boat most owners start with, and the one a lot of them keep for good.

Holland 32 & 38

The downeast cruisers

Solid-glass hulls built as kits or finished boats, less engine — the backbone of the lineup for years.

Pea Pod

The classic rowing hull

A traditional double-ended rowing peapod, built the old way, for owners who want oars instead of an outboard.

Holland 20

The newest addition

Built to fill the gap between the 14 and the 32 — a smaller boat for owners who still want a true Holland hull.

What We Value

How the shop runs

Say what's on the price sheet

What's quoted is what's built. If something isn't standard, it's priced as an option — not buried in the total.

We're there at launch

Our presence at launch is free and expected, within Maine — we want to see every boat run right the first time.

A narrow lineup, done well

Five hulls, not fifty. Every model benefits from everything we learned building the last one.
